Yudh Nashian Virudh emerges as catalyst to wipe out drug menace from Punjab
SEPTEMBER 17 SEPTEMBER
A meeting under the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign was held in Jalandhar City on Thursday, bringing together members of Village Defence Committees and Ward Defence Committees from the Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar Cantt, Jalandhar West and Jalandhar North assembly constituencies. The meeting focused on strengthening grassroots participation and intensifying efforts to curb the drug menace across the district. Mayor Vineet Dhir, Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia, Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh, Doaba Coordinator of the Nasha Mukti Morcha Atin Agnihotri and Halqa In charge Rajwinder Kaur Thiara addressed the gathering and called upon the committee members to remain actively engaged with residents in their respective villages and wards. They further said the ongoing campaign was being taken forward with the objective of eliminating the drug menace while channelising the energy of young people towards constructive activities. They emphasised that sustained public participation, alongside enforcement and rehabilitation measures, was essential for addressing the problem at the grassroots level. They said that more than 76,000 arrests had been made during the campaign’s 551-day drive in the state. They also stated under the next phase, teams of Nasha Mukti Morcha members would visit every village and ward during the following month to interact with residents, spread awareness and discuss progress in the fight against drugs. The meeting highlighted the role of local defence committees in maintaining public awareness, encouraging youth towards positive activities and supporting the broader efforts against drug abuse. Interacting with the media, Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia said the government had adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle drug abuse, combining enforcement with preventive and rehabilitative measures. He said efforts were being made to engage youngsters in sports and other productive activities, with the construction of sports stadiums in villages and the Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan initiative playing an important role in encouraging youth participation in sports. At the same time, concerted efforts were being undertaken to facilitate treatment and rehabilitation for people affected by drug abuse. Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh said the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police had registered 127 FIRs and arrested 150 alleged drug peddlers during the preceding 16 days. He said sustained police action was aimed at disrupting the supply chain and acting against those involved in drug trafficking.
